NUTRITION

Food security. At the thirteenth session of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EuroLat) that took place on November 5, its co-chairs warned about the food crisis that many countries have suffered due to the pandemic, and urged governments and international organizations to strengthen its food security programs. Member countries are expected to take these recommendations into account when designing social containment plans for the economic crisis generated by COVID-19 for 2021.

In this sense, the co-presidents of EuroLat, the president of the Latin American Parliament, Jorge Pizarro, and the deputy to the European Parliament, Javi López, expressed that food security programs must include mechanisms to “provide all people living in poverty with means to meet their basic and emergency needs, in order to ensure sufficient and nutritious food for all and to guarantee the continuity of food supply chains. “

Additionally, they called for the protection of small producers and short supply chains, as well as to support the negotiations for the achievement of a United Nations Binding Treaty on transnational companies and other companies with respect to human rights.

Next steps

The EuroLat co-chairs urged countries to ensure sufficient and nutritious food for all people and to guarantee the continuity of food supply chains. It is expected that these recommendations will be used as input in the medium term by both the Executive and the Legislative branches of the region for the development of public policies to promote food security.
