Peru
11 octubre 2019

On October 10, Peru’s Council of Ministers approved Emergency Decree No. 002-2019  calling for elections to the new Congress, following its dissolution by President Martín Vizcarra on September 30. The elections were originally scheduled for January 26, 2020.

The regulations establish the provisions for Peruvian electoral bodies to issue regulations, norms and statutes for the conduct of elections and instruct the budget allocations to ensure that the electoral organisms can count on the corresponding financing to purchase goods and services at national level.

The president of the Council of Ministers, Vicente Zeballos, stated that the Government will not participate nor have “any level of involvement” in the January 2020 elections. The Premier pointed out that the electoral process will be promoted from a neutral and democratic role to guarantee the widespread participation of citizens.
