Legislative Branch sends to committees Beijing Treaty, bill establishing new tariff schedule and Televisa and Univision finalize merger

On February 1, a series of events of interest to your sector took place. Below, we provide you with more information about them:
- The Senate sent to the Asia-Pacific-Africa Foreign Affairs, Foreign Affairs and Culture Committees the draft bill to ratify the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances. The treaty develops an international framework for the protection and enhancement of the intellectual property rights of performers in audiovisual performances. The proposal is expected to be discussed in the corresponding committees in the medium term.
- The Senate sent to the Finance and Public Credit Committee and the Legislative Studies Committee the bill that seeks to issue a new Law on Import and Export Taxes. The text seeks to reconcile the tariff designation of goods subject to foreign trade processes in the country with the best international practices. The proposal is expected to be discussed in the corresponding committees in the medium term.
- Televisa and Univision announced that they have completed the transaction to officially close their merger. In this regard, they announced that they plan to launch a streaming platform in the first half of the year. Wade Davis, CEO of Televisa Univision, stated that “the closing of our merger marks a historic moment for our company and our industry.
