On June 11, the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) called on the Electoral Nominations Committee (CPE) to submit the list of candidates to the National Electoral Council (CNE) in the next three days, after the TSJ declared the “unconstitutional omission” (or violation of the duty to legislate) of the National Assembly (AN) regarding the election of the members of the CNE. The political agreement on the composition of the CNE is key to guaranteeing the transparency of the legislative elections scheduled for December this year.

AN president Juan Guaidó criticized the decision and pointed out that “any electoral authority that is not appointed by the National Assembly will be rejected and not recognized both by Venezuela and the democratic world.” He declared that the TSJ was violating the procedures established to designate the CNE, which includes a public call for someone to run as a candidate, the study of the profile of the interested parties, and the presentation of objections to the candidacies, among other aspects.
