Antimicrobial resistance. Experts from around the world discussed and analysed the recommendations of the world conference on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) during the 87th Annual Assembly of Delegates of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), which took place at the end of May in Paris, France. The meeting was attended by representatives of the 182 member countries and observers from international and regional organisations. The Latin American region is expected to strengthen international collaboration and coordination for the surveillance and monitoring of AMR and the use of antimicrobials, as addressed by the Second OIE Global Conference held in Morocco in 2018, and to continue to study these issues at the national level.
During the debate, they highlighted the global progress that was seen after the Second OIE World Conference on AMR held in Morocco in 2018, where recommendations had been issued with the aim of strengthening collaboration between the organizations of the tripartite alliance: OIE, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO).
Representatives of the assembly also discussed the challenge of veterinary services and their capacity to adapt to future scenarios such as climate change and natural disasters. As a result, countries were urged to increase their level of knowledge and prepare to deal with the effects of external factors through the development of a risk register, foresight exercises and institutional risk assessment.
Finally, considerations and recommendations were analysed in the light of the current situation in the world regarding African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, classical swine fever and peste des petits ruminants.
