Committee Continues to Analyze Personal Data Bill: Uafe Signs Agreement to Eradicate Money Laundering

On September 23, the Sovereignty and International Relations Committee resumed its study of the draft on personal data protection. On this occasion, the legislators reviewed the matrix containing observations for the drafting of the bill. In this sense, they defined that the Law’s object and purpose will be to guarantee the exercise of the right to the protection of personal data, including access and decisions on information. Both resolutions are expected to be enacted by the Executive in the short term.

The lawmakers underscored the guiding principles of the bill. These include the regime of rights, special data categories, the transfer or communication of personal data, personal data security, the obligations of the person responsible for personal data processing, the application of the principles of rights, the international transfer or communication of personal data, a regime of sanctions and data protection authority.

In turn, the Committee’s advisory team stated that the wording of the regulations seeks to cover the treatment of personal data contained in any type of support, whether or not they are digitized. They pointed out that information pertaining to children and adolescents, as well as credit and health data, among others, will be considered sensitive data.

In other news, the Financial and Economic Analysis Unit and the Pan American Development Foundation INC. signed an Interinstitutional Cooperation Agreement, establishing mechanisms to facilitate the coordination and implementation of activities aimed at strengthening prevention capabilities and eradicating Money Laundering and crime financing. In turn, the agreement will last for two years and provides technical support for the search for solutions to reduce financial crimes, especially “manifestations of organized crime and corruption.”
