Just prior to the reopening of the economy, the Guatemalan Chamber of Industry presented a Prevention Protocol containing recommendations for private companies so that they can return to business. Presented on May 28, the measure recommends stronger health measures for restaurants and encourages them to do home delivery. Meanwhile, the Executive Branch’s National Coronavirus Committee is progressing with the preparation of reopening protocols that will be obligatory throughout the country. Also, the President extended for 30 days the state of public calamity.

The Executive also released new details for its three-point reopening plan: in the first stage, mobility restrictions would be reduced by one hour (curfew from 6 pm to 5 am); in the second phase, the curfew would be reduced to between 8 pm and 5 am, while the “new normal” foreseen for the third phase would be reached with the corresponding gradual reactivation of shops and services.

The Industrial Chamber of Guatemala proposed increasing the use of face masks, gloves and alcohol gel for restaurants as well as upping the frequency of cleaning and sanitation routines. The entity also called for establishments to promote home delivery, place limits on table capacity, and use disposable materials.
