COLOMBIA

On November 9, the First Committee of the House of Representatives approved the bill 17/2021 that establishes measures to protect the right to privacy of financial consumers. The initiative regulates the means and times in which it will be allowed to communicate with consumers. The bill is expected to be debated by the plenary of the House of Representatives in the coming weeks.

The initiative, promoted by Juan Carlos Wills Ospina, representative of the Conservative Party, seeks to protect the right to privacy of financial consumers. For this purpose, it proposes the restriction of contacts through text messages, data messages, telephone calls, e-mails and similar during non-business hours, weekends and holidays.

In addition, financial entities may use for contacts only the channel provided by the financial consumer, and in no case will the consumer be contacted more than once per day, nor by more than two channels during the same week.
