On Sunday, April 11, the second round of elections was held in Ecuador. With 99,89% of the ballots counted, Guillermo Lasso of the alliance (CREO-PSC) is the winning candidate of the run-off election. So far he won 52.36% of the votes, against 47,64% of candidate Andres Arauz (UNES). With this result, Lasso will be the president of Ecuador for four years (2021-2025).

The president-elect thanked all Ecuadorians for their trust and stated that during his administration he will take a different path from that of the last 14 years. In addition, Lasso said that from May 24 (the day of the presidential inauguration) he will assume with responsibility the “challenge of changing the destiny of our country and achieve for all an Ecuador of opportunities and prosperity”. Some of his main government proposals are the tax deduction for companies that generate jobs, the promotion of a financial integration system that fosters free competition and the implementation of 5G technology. For his part, Arauz acknowledged his defeat in this second round of elections. However, he stated that together with his political and legislative force (UNES), which has the largest number of seats in the Assembly, he will remain vigilant against any attempt to “use the State for the benefit of a few privileged people”. Arauz also stated that, when it comes to measures that are of collective benefit, of public interest, his party will be willing to dialogue.
