On Tuesday, September 11th, the deputies of the Finance Committee resumed the debate on the bill amending Law No. 19.799 on electronic documents, electronic signatures and certification services. The bill aims to give the electronic signature a functional equivalence with respect to physical documents. It also aims to extend its scope.

The bill was introduced by President Sebastián Piñera during his previous administration in 2014. On that occasion it was passed by the Economy Committee and its debate was stopped once it reached the Finance Committee. On Tuesday the deputies of that committee received representatives of the Executive , who anticipated that they will present amendments to the bill.

Although these changes have not yet been formalized, according to officials from the Ministry of Finance, they will aim to adapt its content to current Chilean technology. In view of this, the committee decided to send the bill to the Economy Committee so that it can analyze it again based on the Executive’s suggestions. This committee will focus its work on studying the technical application of any suggestions made by the Executive. Once the study is completed, the bill will be introduced again to the Finance Committee. There, its financial impact will be evaluated.
