The senator and author of the bill Sen. Jaime Amín Hernández (Centro Democrático -opposition) anticipated that he will propel the study of the personal data initiative in the Senate during the new period of ordinary sessions that will start next March 16th.

The bill that modifies the Statutory Law 1581 of 2012 about data protection for the colombian people proposes that the new competent authority to receive and process international transfers of data should be the Superintendence of Industry and Trade (Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio-SIC). The SIC will also be able to investigate and penalise those that use the data in an improper way.

The initiative got a favorable ruling in the First Committee of the Senate back in September 2017. Even though it is in the agenda of the Senate´s plenary since then, in the session of December 6th 2017, Amín Hernandez requested a postponement of the discussion in the floor because the initiative did not have the 51 votes required for its approval.
