The President of the Republic will face new vacancy motions in March

Congressman Alberto Quintanilla (Nuevo Perú, opposition) reported that he is working on a new vacancy motion against the President of the Republic Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, which he will introduce on February 26th. The aim is to debate this motion on Thursday, March 1st, the day on which Congress resumes it’s sessions after it’s recess.
He added that Congress can include the debate on this issue in the agenda and thus begin the process to dismiss the head of state for moral incapacity.
The positioning of the different parliamentary groups
Quintanilla said that the Frente Amplio accompanies the drafting of a new vacancy motion.
Meanwhile, the Fuerza Popular bloc (FP, opposition) has not yet officially expressed its support for this initiative. On the other hand, the legislator Mario Mantilla (FP) said that the majority of members of his group are in favor of the vacancy.
The Acción Popular party (opposition) will wait to hear the statements before the Lava Jato Investigative Committee of the former Odebrecht official, Jorge Barata, before making a decision. The party Alianza Para el Progreso (opposition) has not yet decided its position on the issue.
Célula Parlamentaria Aprista (opposition) has already announced that it will not support this vacancy measure against Kuczynski.
President Kuczynski focuses on the regional agenda
In recent statements the President of the Republic, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, assured that his government does not have time for sterile discussions. “I ask Congress to support us. Peru wants work, wants to see progress and we are here not for Byzantine discussions, we are here to do the work for which the Peruvians chose me” he said.
On the other hand, the Head of State, said that in the coming weeks he will meet with the president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, and will be present when Chilean elected president, Sebastián Piñera takes office.
Kuczynski also recalled that next April Peru will host the VIII Summit of the Americas. In this regard, he indicated that “Considering the current situation in Venezuela, my government has decided that the presence of President Maduro at the VIII Summit of the Americas is no longer welcome. This decision is supported by the Lima Group and is based on the 2001 Declaration of Quebec”.
