PERU

On November 16, the Peruvian Congress decided that Francisco Sagasti would be the new interim president of the Republic. He obtained 97 votes out of 130, needing just 62 to be elected. Sagasti is expected to be sworn in in the short term in order to take office.

Following the resignation of Manuel Merino, the Peruvian Congress approved a new Board led by legislator Francisco Sagasti. Taking into account the fact that there was no-one in office, and the fact that he chaired Congress, it is constitutionally incumbent upon him to immediately assume the role of head of state.

Sagasti thus becomes Peru’s third president in less than a week, following the removal of Martín Vizcarra and the resignation of his successor Manuel Merino on Sunday. In this way, he is expected to complete the current term of government, which ends on July 28, 2021.

Francisco Sagasti is 76 years old, is an industrial engineer and researcher and is part of the Partido Morado. He was elected congressman for the period 2020-2021, but before that held positions in different governments and was also an official at the World Bank.
