MEXICO

On February 17 the Economy, Commerce and Competitiveness Committee of the Chamber of Deputies received representatives of the Mexican Association of On-Line Sales (AMVO in Spanish). During the meeting, the benefits and opportunities that the development of electronic commerce has for the country were discussed. Likewise, the possibility of organizing a meeting with experts on the subject with the aim of guiding and collaborating in the implementation of changes in the current regulatory framework to promote such activity was also evaluated. Although the date has not yet been confirmed, it is expected to be held during the third week of March.

At the meeting, the president of the Committee, Jorge Ernesto Inzunza Armas (PAN – opposition), emphasized the urgency of implementing modifications to the current regulatory framework regarding electronic commerce due to the increase of commercial operations carried out on these platforms. In this sense, he affirmed that “it is necessary to update the law according to the advances in technology and protect consumers from abuses”.

For his part, María Rosa Hermida, representative of AMVO, suggested to the members of the committee to hold a seminar detailing the current legal framework that regulates electronic commerce and its different modalities. The objective of this seminar, according to Hermida, would be to collaborate from the private sector with the different authorities “for the development of this field, as well as to inform about its novelties”. Likewise, the idea would be that, during this meeting, different experts from the NGO would participate as speakers, providing information that would collaborate in the strengthening of the current legislation to promote electronic commerce.
