Zero Hunger Parliamentary Sessions. In November, the Zero Hunger Parliamentary Sessions brought together representatives of the different Executive Branches of the region and representatives of the Parliamentary Front against Hunger of Latin America and the Caribbean. In the meetings that took place during the month, participants agreed on the need to include food as a priority issue in the legislative agendas of the respective countries post-pandemic. Both groups are expected to carry out advocacy campaigns in the different Latin American Congresses throughout 2021 to promote legislation aimed at reducing food waste, contributing to agricultural development and promoting a sustainable use of natural resources.

In this regard, the regional representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Julio Berdegué, stressed that “the issue of food is not being included in the COVID 19 recovery programs of the countries of the region strong enough. ” The representatives of the different countries expressed their commitment to maintain the right to food as a central axis of the legislation for the recovery from the pandemic.

Additionally, they shared their practices in relation to bills to support family farming, reduce food losses and waste, contribute to agricultural development, promote responsible land governance, and create a food security framework.

Next steps

In the framework of the Zero Hunger parliamentary sessions promoted by the Parliamentary Fronts against Hunger in Latin America and the FAO, the participants reinforced their commitment to promoting an update of the regulatory framework to guarantee food security, child nutrition and school feeding. In turn, they highlighted the promotion of a legislative agenda, for 2021, focused on nutrition and improved use of natural resources. These sessions are expected to allow the sharing of good practices in the region and the development of collaboration tools that can be implemented in the legislative agendas of the different participating countries.
