On October 7, Ecuadorian President Lenín Moreno appointed Mauricio Pozo as the new Minister of Economy and Finance, replacing Richard Martínez. In reference to Martinez, Moreno said that he “closed a cycle” and thanked him for his “extraordinary work in the ministry”. The new minister is already in office.

Pozo is an economist and has a master’s degree in economics. He was also a candidate for the vice presidency of Ecuador with Cynthia Viteri for the Partido Social Cristiano in the 2017 presidential elections. He has been a director of the Chamber of Commerce and the Quito Stock Exchange.

In 2003, he formed part of the Lucio Gutiérrez administration, first as economic advisor and then as Minister of Economy. In 2005 he became Ecuador’s ambassador to the United States.
