Food systems. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino) published a joint statement in August on the food systems of the region in the context of COVID-19. The entities consider that the economic impact of the pandemic forces States to increase resources to guarantee the population’s food security. In this way, the agencies recommend the countries implement “stable and ambitious food and nutritional security strategies that include measures to transform food systems into more efficient, inclusive, safe, health and sustainable systems.” It is expected that in the coming months, the countries of the region will take this position into account to outline public policies to address and mitigate the pandemic.

FAO and Parlatino call for the strengthening of the agri-food sector and food production as fundamental steps to reactivate the economies of the region. In this way, they request to work towards achieving healthier and more sustainable food systems.

Other measures they propose are the application of policies and incentives to family farming, such as an incorporation into the food supply chain and the establishment of a price monitoring system. Organizations consider it important to promote regulatory environments that cover the risks of family farming.

Next steps

On August 12, FAO and Parlatino published a joint statement asking the countries of the region to increase economic resources to strengthen food systems against COVID-19. The organizations appeal to the strengthening of the agri-food sector and food production as fundamental steps to reactivate the economies of the region. The countries of the region are expected to implement the FAL and Parlatino recommendations in the coming months.
