María Alejandra Muñoz Takes Office as Vice President of the Republic
24 julio 2020

On July 22, the National Assembly appointed María Alejandra Muñoz Seminario as Vice President of the Republic of Ecuador. The position had been vacant since July 7, when her predecessor Otto Sonnenholzner resigned for “personal reasons”. Muñoz will hold office until May 2021, when President Lenin Moreno’s term ends.

Muñoz is a lawyer specialized in inclusion policies and the prevention of violence against women. Since September 2018, she has been the director general of Ecuador’s National Customs Service (Senae). Previously, between June and September of that year, she had served as Undersecretary of the Presidential Agenda.

During her speech, Muñoz said: “During these next 10 months, I pledge my life testimony, my integrity and that of my family to the service of this country in order to sow confidence and peace, with love, with charity, to serve and to love.”
