Congress Brings Forward Start of Ordinary Legislative Sessions
10 julio 2020

On July 6, the president of the Peruvian Congress, Manuel Merino de Lama (Acción Popular), opened the second ordinary session of the 2020-2021 parliamentary period, thus bringing forward the beginning of the ordinary period originally scheduled for July 27. They will session until December 18, 2020.

The Congress has thus been empowered to resume ordinary functions, which means that it can consider bills already submitted as well as new initiatives. In the extraordinary period (scheduled from July 6 to 27) it could only consider the bills submitted to the Legislative branch before June 26.

Commenting on the issue, Merino de Lama said that as congressmen, they will have to defend the “institutionality of Congress” beyond any eventual political differences, and reaffirmed his commitment to the country and the Executive branch to achieve a “coordinated and articulated work”.
