Vizcarra Announces General Elections for April 11, 2021
10 julio 2020

On July 8, the President of Peru, Martín Vizcarra, announced that he had signed a decree calling for general elections on April 11, 2021. The president stated that regulations had been issued for the election of a president, vice presidents, congressmen and other representatives before the Andean Parliament.

According to the Peruvian Constitution, presidential and legislative terms last five years. Likewise, the regulations establish that, in the event that no presidential candidate reaches more than 50% of the votes, a second electoral round will be held, which is scheduled for June 6.

Vizcarra recalled that when he began his mandate on March 23, 2018 to replace Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, he did so with the “commitment to complete his mandate.” It is worth noting that Kuczynski resigned from the presidency amid a political scandal regarding the alleged purchase of votes from lawmakers in exchange for political support.
