Parlasur works to consolidate a plan of action against hunger in the context of COVID-19

Food Security. On June 4, the Parliamentary Front against Hunger of Parlasur brought together various representatives from the region to discuss food in times of COVID-19. The objective of the meeting was to open a process of dialogue and consultation among Mercosur members in order to identify the main challenges posed by the pandemic in terms of food and to define the lines of action of the Organization. The expectation is that, based on this exchange, a strategic alliance between Parlasur and FAO will be strengthened to consolidate a 2020-2021 work plan to address the effects of the crisis on food security and nutritional quality. In addition, it is expected that countries will refine their health protocols in favor of producers in the food system.

Through the videoconference on “food in times of COVID”, members of Parlasur contributed their experiences to help accelerate the transformation of food systems into sustainable and healthy ones, in the context of the pandemic. Along these lines, emphasis was placed on strengthening policies that allow combating inequality and guaranteeing food security for the population, as well as the availability of scientific evidence when making political decisions.

During the meeting, emphasis was also placed on the cooperation of Latin American countries as regards the transit of foodstuffs. In this regard, a radical change of paradigm was proposed, in which nation-states assume a new role in relation to food production and the fight against poverty at the global level. In addition, it was established as necessary to care for the producers of the food system and countries were urged to develop health and safety protocols to support them.

Next steps: Based on the virtual meeting promoted by the Parliamentary Front against Hunger, Mercosur parliamentarians will seek to position the issue of food and nutritional security in the context of COVID-19 on their agendas. The expectation is that, in the coming weeks, Parlasur will define lines of action in food matters with the aim of consolidating a 2020-2021 work plan that includes guidelines for the member countries.
