Debt: Coupon Tied to Agricultural Exports Could be Included in Offer to Bondholders
Argentina

The Government is evaluating including a coupon tied to agricultural exports in its offer to bondholders for the negotiation of the country’s US$ 64.800 million in foreign law debt. For this to work, the moving average of the last five years would be taken as a reference, according to reports. The new deadline set for the renegotiation expires on June 12 and Argentina is expected to make a new offer soon.

This idea has already been suggested to the bondholders during previous negotiations, although the details still have to be defined. This instrument would be in line with the country’s ability to pay.

“I want to be frank, I could have closed an agreement and let my government work in peace without having to pay much, or nothing, but this is Alberto Fernández’s solution; it is not Argentina’s solution. What I want is that whoever succeeds me does not have to bear the weight of this, because you have to think not only about today but tomorrow.”

Continuing along these lines, Economy Minister, Martín Guzmán, told the press that they intend to improve the offer but that “there won’t be a greater number than the one we plan to offer in the next few days or weeks.”

“We made a proposal this year and we are working to improve it. The crucial thing is that the agreement sought must respect the precepts of sustainability, and accept that Argentina has commitments that it can fulfill. What we have been working on is to normalize interest rates,” he stressed.
