HONDURAS – GUATEMALA

On May 25, the governments of Honduras and Guatemala extended the social distancing measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. The Honduran Executive branch extended the national curfew through May 31, during which citizens may only leave their homes once a week. Meanwhile, the Guatemalan government extended restrictions on freedom of movement through June 1. Both measures could be extended again in the coming days should both administrations deem it necessary in the fight to curb COVID-19.

In Honduras people can go out once a week, depending on their ID card number. However, it is not possible to circulate on weekends, except in those cases foreseen by the Executive branch. Supermarkets, gas stations, pharmacies and banks are open only during weekdays and cannot operate on Saturdays and Sundays.

Guatemala extended the weekday curfew measure from 5 pm to 5 am while authorized businesses and activities include supermarkets, delivery services and banks, among others. These activities are not permitted at weekends. The Executive branch also created a COVID-19 Presidential Committee to develop measures to tackle the pandemic, comprising officials from the Ministries of Health and Finance as well as other departments, which is due to begin work in the next few days.
