Argentina

On May 26, the Debt Monitoring Joint Committee agreed to investigate national indebtedness and “capital flight” during the administration of former president Mauricio Macri. This measure was put forward by the Frente de Todos (FDT – ruling party) at a virtual meeting.

The ruling party is keen to review the loan granted by the IMF and will be requesting reports from the Argentine Central Bank to see if the authorities issued any legal opinion concerning the impact of the operation on the balance of payments. Officials will also ask the Ministry of Economy and the Supreme Court to provide reports on any related legal cases to gather supporting documentation for their investigation.

After this agreement was reached at the Committee meeting, Sen. Oscar Parrilli (FDT – ruling party) asked for currency outflows over the past three years to be investigated to identify the parties responsible. Meanwhile, the opposition called for the “capital flight” during the administrations of Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández, between 2003 and 2015 to be investigated as well, but the initiative lacked the requisite support from the Frente de Todos benches and did not succeed.
