On February 21, the Ministry of Health issued Resolution 248/2020 to relaunch the Remediar program unifying the rational use of, and access to, essential drugs and health supplies. The list of products included in this initiative is to be defined by the Executive Branch in the coming weeks. The decision repeals the Universal Health Coverage program, originally implemented in 2016, which eliminated the Remediar Programme created in 2002.

The Remediar Programme aims to guarantee the supply of critical medical supplies and drugs through provincial or government health-care centers and instructs the Under-Secretariat for Medicines and Strategic Information of the Ministry of Health to promote the necessary actions for its implementation.

The relaunch of the program is part of the Social Solidarity Law (27,541) regulating economic, financial, fiscal, health, and social matters. Following the declaration of an emergency in the health sector, Congress empowered the Government to ensure the supply of essential drugs for outpatient treatment among socially vulnerable individuals, and access to essential drugs and medical supplies to prevent and treat infectious and chronic non-communicable diseases.
