On January 29, the Peruvian Justice System ordered 15 months of pre-trial detention for Keiko Fujimori, the leader of the opposition party Fuerza Popular. Fujimori is being investigated for four crimes, including asset laundering and the illegal financing of her 2011 and 2016 election campaigns.

The order was issued by Judge Victor Zúñiga, who considered that there was strong evidence that Fujimori was the head of a criminal money laundering organization. The judge argued that preventive detention was necessary to continue with the investigation as she presented a risk of flight.

The prosecutor announced that he will request a sentence of 18 years and 9 months for the crimes of asset laundering, illicit association, criminal organization, obstruction of justice, false declaration, procedural fraud, and generic falsehood.

Fujimori was arrested in October 2018 for allegedly laundering the proceeds from Odebrecht for her 2011 presidential campaign, and in November 2019 the Constitutional Court (TC) ordered that the pre-trial detention be lifted.
