On December 10, the Independent High Level Commission on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) expert group presented the World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus with eight recommendations aimed at accelerating progress against NCDs. The commission, which reports to the WHO, explained that NCDs are one of the leading causes of death worldwide and called for the creation of a mixed fund to help countries finance targeted action. The Commission hopes that these measures will be implemented to achieve better access to health for the world’s population within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

The eight recommendations target the fight against diseases such as cancer and diabetes and include: establishing a multi-donor trust fund to support countries in reducing NCDs; encouraging collaboration with business; and providing technical support to member countries to enable them to deliver effective control and prevention responses. The recommendations also suggest providing adequate social protection for all, and advise countries to ensure the essential components of universal health coverage.

During the event, the WHO pledged to work with all partners to reduce premature deaths from NCDs through prevention, control and treatment. Dr. Adhanom Ghebreyesus recognized that “global progress has been slow and uneven” in the fight against NCDs and called for “innovative ways” and increased investment to improve healthcare and services. The meeting was attended by governments, UN agencies, civil society and the private sector.
