On October 30, the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI, for its acronym in Spanish) presented a proposal for Peru to withdraw from the Convention on a Code of Conduct for Liner Conferences (1974) for public consultation. The report argues that the Convention – which aims to regulate agreements between shipping companies in the international transport of goods –  fails to benefit the country’s international trade and “lacks practical application”. The Convention also focused on incentives for national carriers – at a time, and in a context, where the vast majority of countries did not have provisions for the defence of free competition. Approval of the report is the duty of the Committee for the Defense of Free Competition, which will receive and analyze comments submitted.
