NUTRITION

Healthy food. The 46th session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) was held in Rome from 14 to 18 October. Antonio Guterres, General Secretary of the United Nations (UN), warned the representatives of the 111 countries present that agricultural food systems “are central to face the triple challenge of food production, improved nutrition and climate protection”. In addition, the Quadrennial Work Plan (2020-2023), which sets targets in the fight against malnutrition, was approved, and government delegates pledged to advance in the formulation of the Voluntary Guidelines on Food Systems and Nutrition, to be discussed at next year’s session.

The organization’s Work Plan for 2020-2023 provides a framework for accelerating progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDO 2) of eradicating hunger by 2030. In this regard, it sets out guidelines and targets on priority issues in the fight against hunger, undernutrition and malnutrition, with special attention to the most affected population groups. These include promoting gender equality and the rights of girls and women, understanding inequality and poverty as one of the root causes of hunger and malnutrition.

On the other hand, the objective of promoting farmers’ access to innovation to improve food security and nutrition standards in the context of increased climate variability and extreme weather events also stands out. On this point, Antonio Guterres warned that ‘hunger is rising again’, adding that climate emergencies are an increasing threat to agriculture.

Next steps

The Committee on World Food Security is the main intergovernmental and international platform on food issues promoting coordinated working among stakeholders. In the coming year its member countries are expected, in line with the CFS plan, to advance in tackling food security and nutrition to step up their efforts to eradicate hunger by 2030.
