On October 27, Alberto Fernandez, the candidate of Frente de Todos (FT), won the presidential elections with 48.1% of the vote, with Cristina Fernandez to assume as Vice President. Incumbent Mauricio Macri came second in the election, winning 40.4%, meaning he will step down on December 10, when the new president moves into the Pink House (Casa Rosada). Read full report here.

Among Fernández’s proposals is renegotiating Argentina’s debt to the IMF, eliminating VAT on basic basket products and creating a system of credits for small to medium-sized enterprises. He has also said he will create a Ministry of Women and that the Health Secretariat will regain its ministerial status.

Regarding the legislative situation, the Macri coalition Juntos por el Cambio, which won nine new seats, will continue to be the largest minority in Deputies, where it must negotiate with other parties to achieve quorum. For its part, the FT and its Peronist allies will have 114 seats in Deputies. Meanwhile, in the Senate the FT increased its representation and is only one senator shy of a majority.
