At the 5th Binational Cabinet meeting held on August 27, Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra and his Colombian counterpart Iván Duque signed a cooperation agreement to promote creative industries and “continue to recognize culture as an engine of socio-economic development.”

Both Ministries of Culture will work on the implementation of the agreement and, according to the Colombian Minister of Culture, Carmen Vásquez, will jointly develop “policies and agreements to promote audiovisual co-production content.”

Iván Duque said of the agreement that “it shows that we can advance towards what should be a regional original content market for our creative minds to have the chance to grow and use their talent as a sustainable source of income, improving quality of life as a whole.” He added that this will help to promote “innovation, creativity and the creation of new jobs for youth” in both countries.

During the Binational Cabinet meeting, Vásquez also met with her Peruvian counterpart, Luis Jaime Castillo Butters. According to Vásquez, the outcome was a joint commitment to “share experiences associated with public policy building in the area of audiovisual heritage preservation.” She added that both culture ministries will work on “an audiovisual co-production agreement emphasizing fiction content, documentaries and animation productions,” to “promote the consumption, access and circulation of national cinematographic pieces.”

Meanwhile, on August 17, the director of the Colombian Civil Aviation Authority and his Peruvian counterpart signed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand and modernize commercial air relations between the two countries. The treaty would facilitate the exercise of fifth freedom air traffic rights (which refers to the right to board and disembark passengers, mail and cargo to and/or from third states), without any geographical restrictions.
