August 27 saw the conclusion of the third round of negotiations to update the Peru-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Peruvian Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez said that progress had been made in negotiations on competition, e-commerce and customs issues. The aim is to modernize and maximize the benefits of the current FTA.

This third round concluded with a series of discussions on customs matters and procedures to establish origin to facilitate information processing by operators. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for mid-September in Lima.

Signed in April 2009, the Peru-China FTA entered into force in March 2010, paving the way for China to become Peru’s main international trading partner.
