On August 16, the national superintendent of Sunat Customs, Rafael Garcia Melgar, announced that the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) is working on a new Table of Customs Offenses and Penalties, as part of the amendments being made to the General Customs Law. The aim is to simplify customs processes and reduce costs to improve competitiveness in international trade. Melgar indicated that the Regulation will be published in the next few days.

The Government’s intention is to issue a Supreme Decree to speed up goods liberalization and adapt international facilitation, security and customs control standards. The idea is to upgrade the instruments used to facilitate international trade. The new table of offenses envisages reducing fines for the incorrect declaration of customs values.

This process is part of a public consultation opened by the Executive in June. The Ministry of Economy is working on the observations presented by public and private sector representatives to draw up the final version of the decree which is expected to be published in the next few days.
