National Assembly creates committee for public debt negotiation
Venezuela

On August 13, Juan Guaidó announced that the National Assembly (NA) has created an advisory committee to renegotiate the public debt. Who’s on the committee?

  • Ricardo Villasmil, economist and engineer, member of the Central Bank’s ad hoc board of directors appointed by the NA in July;
  • Ricardo Haussman, economist, Inter-American Development Bank Governor for Venezuela nominated by Juan Guaidó and approved by the IDB Group in March;
  • José Ignacio Fernández, lawyer, appointed Special Attorney of the Republic by the NA in February;
  • Alejandro Grisanti, economist, chair of PDVSA’s ad hoc board of directors named by the NA in May;
  • Deputies Omar Barboza and Andrés Eloy Camejo.

Following Juan Guaidó’s proposal, the NA also designated diplomatic representatives to Greece and Israel. The appointments are symptomatic of a broader tendency of institutions and public roles being split into two in recent years, according to allegiance or support of either maduro or the Opposition.
