The official visit of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, to Chile and Brazil concluded on August 18. The purpose of the mission was to learn about the humanitarian response of these countries to Venezuelan migration and to mobilize the support of the international community.

In a joint statement with Chilean Foreign Minister Teodoro Ribera, Grandi admitted that he is not optimistic about the future of the migratory crisis. “I believe that this flow of Venezuelans into the region (…) will continue if there is no political solution in Venezuela to allow them to return to their country”.

The deadline for obtaining a visa at the Tacna consulate expired on August 16. From now on, new applications will be processed at the Chilean consulate in Lima. A support Visa Assistance Center will also operate there. In particular, this mechanism, which the Chilean government will implement together with the International Organization for Migration, will aid in the proof of identity process for minors.
