On August 6, the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) published its report on the first semester of 2019, highlighting the work to combat piracy and promote copyright and intellectual property. The report is part of the work being carried out by the institution to develop a culture of respect for copyright and intellectual property.

Fight against piracy

Regarding the fight against piracy, the Copyright Directorate (DDA) confiscated illegal merchandise infringing copyright related to music, movies, video games, images of protected characters, and others, for a total value of US$1,407,097. As for software rights, inspections were carried out to verify that companies and institutions are using legally permitted software and have the required licenses for these.

Website blocking

Indecopi stepped up efforts in the fight against Internet piracy, blocking seven web pages that were transmitting and reproducing works, productions and broadcasts protected by copyright and related rights legislation, without the respective authorizations.

Publications and campaigns

The DDA has issued a series of publications to promote the use of licensed programs, such as the Digital Guide to the Legal Use of Software and the Copyright Guide for Cable Broadcasting Distributors. The dissemination program included campaigns on the legal use of software aimed at more than 8,000 SME users during February and June 2019.

Technical assistance and training

As part of its promotional work, Indecopi has trained people linked to different creative industries, who received technical assistance via Indecopi’s copyright platform.
