Period of Ordinary Sessions Extended to Discuss Anti-corruption Bills
Peru
21 junio 2019

Although the ordinary session of the Legislative branch concluded on June 15, Congress Chairman Daniel Salaverry has extended the period until June 25 to allow Congress to usher through bills to curb corrupt practices in Peru.

There are a number of anti-corruption legislative initiatives under way to strengthen the State apparatus, including a modification to parliamentary immunity (which, if passed, could however be eliminated at the request of Justice) and one which prohibits people with a prison conviction from running for political office.

The urgency answers to the fact that the Executive wants these bills to be enacted in the short term so they can enter into force in 2021.
