On June 4, the House of Representatives passed a bill that grants Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Venezuelans in the U.S. The proposal, approved by a margin of 237 votes in favor vs. 187 against, gives Venezuelan citizens living in the U.S. protection and makes it easier to obtain U.S. citizenship. The White House opposes it and President Trump could even veto the bill, if finally approved by the Senate. The upper chamber is expected to study it between June and July.

Separately, the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee ruled in favor of a bill to authorize US$ 200 million in humanitarian aid and US$ 14.5 million to support civil society organizations working for democracy in Venezuela. Both Republican and Democrat Congressmen back the proposal and could pass it in the coming weeks. The proposal includes a plea to the U.S. President to collaborate with international financial organizations to support the reconstruction of Venezuela.
