LABOR

Future of Work. In late March, the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO) held its 335th session, where it outlined the work programme for the upcoming International Labour Conference (ILC). The main topic is set to be the analysis of the future of work. During the event, a report of the World Commission will be submitted for consideration, which proposes providing workers with technological training and that employers implement measures to mitigate harassment in the workplace. At the ILO conference, to be held June 20 and 21, a final declaration will be released recommending that the governments of the organization implement measures to put these proposals into practice.

The Governing Body used its latest session to outline the agenda for the next meeting of the ILC. High on this will be the future of work, with an emphasis on the impact of technological progress on the labour market. The prevention of workplace harassment will also be discussed. Both topics will be addressed by two technical commissions during the conference. A final document will be signed that spell out the ILO’s commitments.

The Council sees debating on the future of work as “essential” – the most important work-related challenge currently being faced by the world. To this end, cooperative work between representatives of various sectors – public and private – and from different countries will be promoted during the Conference. The main topics to be discussed will be: the future of young people, the need for skills and lifelong learning, technology, the formalization of work as a driver of social inclusion, among other themes.

Next steps

The Conference will be held June 20 and 21, during which participants are set to compile a document called the Centenary Declaration to reaffirm the mandate and core historical principles of the ILO. The event will help the ILO and participants to stay abreast of new labor market realities and of how technical advances are impinging on it. It will also serve to outline the long-term strategic direction of the ILO.
