On January 5, the Minister of Economy, Martín Guzmán, met with the governors to provide them with details on the current negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) aimed at restructuring the debt contracted with the organization. The meeting was attended by President Alberto Fernández, who said that “we are entering a moment of definitions with the IMF” and assured that the Government will reach “a convenient restructuring for Argentina”. In the framework of the meeting, Guzmán assured that “the main tension to be able to continue on the path of national recovery is the debt with the IMF” and that it is necessary “to be able to refinance the debts we have to be able to go ahead with our vision of economic programming for the Argentine economy without being conditioned from the point of view of payments and policies”. In this regard, the Minister of Economy pointed out that “the difference between what the IMF proposes and what the Argentine government proposes is to differentiate between a program of adjustment of real expenditure, which would certainly stop the recovery, versus a program that would give continuity to the recovery of the economy”.
