The initiative indicates that the entity will have among its functions that of advising the Ministry of Health and Social Protection in the formulation of national plans and projects related to cancer control. The text is expected to be debated in the Seventh Committee of the House of Representatives in the short term.

The bill establishes that the Institute will have the capacity to coordinate the implementation of an epidemiological surveillance model in oncological matters in the National Cancer Information System and population-based cancer registries, and will be able to produce, market and distribute biotechnological master formulas and radiopharmaceuticals for the treatment of cancer patients.

Likewise, the text indicates that the entity’s Board of Directors will be in charge of formulating policies and projects that correspond to the sectoral plans for health and science, technology and innovation, and their adaptation to the National Development Plan 2018-2022. It also proposes the creation of the “Special Fund for Cancer Research and Innovation” with the objective of financing oncological innovation activities, under the responsibility of the Institute itself.
