On November 29, the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society (Mintel in Spanish) held the International Technical Meeting for the Formulation of Public Policy and National Cybersecurity Strategy. The event was attended by representatives of the government and international organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS), the World Bank and the US State Department. The formulation of a stable national cybersecurity policy for Ecuador was also discussed, and the parties committed to continue sharing experiences in order to create a “cyber secure” environment.

The Minister of Mintel, Vianna Maino, said that the Ecuadorian National Cybersecurity Policy is in the process of being updated thanks to the collaboration of the aforementioned international entities. In turn, the official stated that all possible efforts are being made to “strengthen and build a safe cyberspace, where it is vital to promote the care and protection of data”.

Meanwhile, the World Bank representative in Ecuador, Juan Carlos Álvarez, stressed that there is a clear need to move forward with closing the digital divide and the use of technology to “promote the inclusion of the most vulnerable”. He also pointed out that it is essential to establish a course of action that promotes dialogue between all actors involved in an inclusive digital agenda.

Finally, the US Ambassador to Ecuador, Michael Fitzpatrick, highlighted the benefits of bringing together various actors of the Ecuadorian state with representatives of international organizations to continue the cooperation scheme on cybersecurity. In this way, he announced that “the United States Government reaffirms its commitment to continue working with Ecuador to develop cyber capabilities”, arguing that the parties face “shared threats”, and that for this reason it is necessary to collaborate in building a strong cybersecurity culture in the region.
