Congress approves appointment of three directors of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru

On November 18, the Plenary of the Peruvian Congress approved the appointment of Diego Macera, Inés Choy Chong and Carlos Oliva Neyra as directors of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR in Spanish) for 5 years. The slate of BCR directors was proposed by a multi-party Special Committee, which was approved in plenary with 76 votes in favor, 37 against and no abstentions. The directors are now in office following the legislative enactment by the President of Congress, Maricarmen Alva Prieto.

Below are the profiles of the candidates:

  • Diego Macera: is an economist from Universidad del Pacífico and holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the University of Chicago and has been manager of the Peruvian Institute of Economics (IPE in Spanish) since 2016. He has also been professor of General Economics at Universidad del Pacífico and professor of Public Economics in the Double Degree with the London School of Economics.
  • Inés Choy Chong: is an economist from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Rice University, and served as former Central Operations Manager of the BCR. He has also served on the boards of the National Supervisory Commission of Companies and Securities (Conasev in Spanish) and the Development Finance Corporation (Cofide in Spanish).
  • Carlos Oliva Neyra: is an economist from Universidad del Pacífico and holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Georgetown University. In addition, during 2018 and 2019 he was Minister of Economy and Finance and former Deputy Minister of Finance. He was also director of the BCR and vice-president of the board of directors of Banco de la Nación.
