On September 29, the Executive President of the National Institute for the Defence of Competition (Indecopi in Spanish), Julián Palacín, held a meeting with the Head of the International Cooperation Service of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), Ignacio de Medrano, in order to promote bilateral cooperation and strategic partnership for the exchange of experience and knowledge in intellectual property matters. In addition, the officials announced the beginning of the second phase of the IP Key Latin America project 2022-2024, which provides technical assistance to modernise intellectual property institutions in the region.

Palacín pointed out that cooperation with EUIPO will allow the country to strengthen the issue of designations of origin, inventions and new technologies, as well as the exchange of knowledge. Meanwhile, de Medrano indicated that one of the important aspects to be taken into account in the forthcoming cooperation between Indecopi and the entity will be “to expand intellectual property tools as much as possible to those sectors that do not benefit much from them, such as SMEs”.

With the renewal of the IP Key Latin America project for the period 2022-2024, Indecopi will continue the implementation of the project with activities designed to support micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), in order to protect and make their creations, innovations and developments profitable. Similarly, it is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of their businesses through the strategic use of the intellectual property system.
