On July 30, Congress published the report for the second debate of the bill that creates the National Public Registry of Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Donors and establishes measures on donations and transplants. The initiative, known as the “Jerónimo Law”, seeks to assist cancer patients in the country. The bill is now ready to be discussed in the plenary of the Senate.
The purpose of the law is to create the National Public Registry of Hematopoietic Progenitor Cells Donors and to establish a regulatory framework to regulate the activities related to the procurement, extraction, storage, donation and transplantation of hematopoietic progenitor cells or stem cells from bone marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood and therapeutic products made with them or derived from them.
It also regulates umbilical cord blood banks and establishes duties for donors and recipients of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC). The National Government will promote regional hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) donation campaigns with an ethnic approach.
