On June 8, the Secretariat of Health held a meeting with representatives of the European Union (EU) to deepen cooperation ties in health and pharmacovigilance. On the occasion, the Secretary of Health, Jorge Alcocer Varela, and the ambassador of the European Union delegation in Mexico, Gautier Mignot, agreed to strengthen collaboration in the fight against chronic degenerative diseases and in drug safety. In this context, the Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (COFEPRIS in Spanish) is expected to deepen its cooperation, in the short term, with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in these matters.

The officials held the meeting to review areas of opportunity to expand joint cooperation in the areas of health, pharmacovigilance, hospital emergencies, access to treatment and vaccines against COVID-19. The meeting was also attended by Alejandro Svarch Pérez, head of COFEPRIS, who indicated that regulatory harmonization is one of Mexico’s areas of interest for joint cooperation with the EMA. Concrete measures in this regard could be implemented in the medium term as a result of this deepening of cooperation between the parties.

On behalf of the European Union, the meeting was attended by the Head of Cooperation of the EU delegation in Mexico, Jerome Poussielgue, the Head of the EU Economic and Trade Section in Mexico, Paolo Caridi, and the Trade Advisor, Annabel Boissonade. Martha Caballero Abraham, Head of the International Relations Department of the Secretariat of Health, was also present.
