On Sunday, April 11, the first round of elections took place in Peru. With 99.6% of the precincts processed, Pedro Castillo (Peru Libre), is the most voted candidate with 19.1% of votes; followed by Keiko Fujimori (Fuerza Popular) with 13.3%. Since none of them would have surpassed 50% of the votes, the president of Peru would be elected in a run-off election on June 6. 

It is worth mentioning that the number of votes obtained by Castillo was the biggest surprise of the election day, since, according to the polls carried out until the beginning of April, he was not among the six candidates with the highest voting intentions. Meanwhile, de Soto, Fujimori and López are within the places indicated by the polls.

On the other hand, with 100% of the ballots counted, the new National Congress would be constituted by 10 political parties. The provisional count points to an atomized and polarized Legislative Branch. In addition, it is expected that none of the groups will have a majority of their own, so the elected congressmen will have to align their positions in order to obtain a consensus to impose their agenda.
