WHO advances on goal to eliminate trans fats from food industry

On May 7, the World Health Organization (WHO) reached an agreement with the International Food and Beverage Alliance (IFBA) to eliminate trans fats from foods by 2023. The IFBA committed to ensuring its products do not to contain over two grams of industrial trans fats (ITFA) per 100 grams of fat or oil. WHO will monitor compliance with the agreement.

On May 2, IFBA, which is comprised of 12 leading food and non-alcoholic beverage companies, met with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Geneva. After the meeting IFBA announced the agreement, confirming its alignment with WHO’s goal of progressively reducing trans fats in processed foods. “The Alliance is determined to innovate and optimize the composition of its products to contribute to WHO’s goal of eliminating industrial trans-fat (iTFA) from the global food supply by 2023,” it said in a statement.

The agreement is in line with, and follows on from, the Replace report published by WHO in 2018 which calls on food producers and manufacturers of fats and oils to commit to eliminating industrial trans fats from the global food supply chain.

Next steps

Based on the agreement between the International Food and Beverage Alliance (IFBA) and WHO to reduce the trans fat component in foods and non-alcoholic beverages by 2023 to 2 grams per 100 grams, WHO is expected to monitor IFBA’s commitment and promote recommendations for governments in the region to implement national agreements of this type.
