Brazil

On May 15, the Constitution and Justice Committee of the Chamber of Deputies began work to study the tax reform bill filed by Deputy Baleia Rossi (Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB) – allied with the ruling party). Once this committee has passed the bill, it will be analysed by another special committee.

This bill eliminates six taxes: three federal, one state, and one municipal, creating a single Tax on Goods and Services Operations, complemented by a tax on specific goods and services under federal jurisdiction which will cover cigarettes and alcoholic beverages.

As the proposed measure will also amend the Constitution, it must be examined by the Constitution and Justice Committee of Deputies. Accordingly, Deputy João Roma (Partido Republicano Brasileiro (PRB) – allied with the ruling party) defended the bill before the committee today and gave his favorable opinion on the admissibility of the text.

The deputies have agreed to hold two public hearings some time next week to continue discussing the proposal.
