PERU

On April 30, Deputy minister of Communications Virginia Nakagawa announced that the Executive is drafting a proposal to amend the Broadband Law to guarantee Internet access for all sectors of the population. The regulatory proposal is expected to be ready in July.

The Deputy minister’s announcement is part of the Government’s drive to massify broadband internet in rural areas and reduce the digital divide, promoting technological development in Peru. According to Nakagawa, the Government will not seek to repeal the current Broadband Law, but instead introduce modifications “in the light of the experience gained.”

The Deputy minister stressed that the main objective of the amendments is to improve citizens’ quality of life so that more people can access technological tools using the fiber optic network. It is expected that the regulation, which seek consensus between the public and private sector, will be introduced in July this year.
